Money, according to a classical definition, is what money does. And truth, as they say, is like a rubber-band. Stretch it and it can do wonders. If we can really make money do what we want, there is nothing like that.
To provide 10 quick tips to save money is a first-aid approach to a very intricate problem perhaps faced by almost each of us and that that is how to manage our money. To save some part of what we have to spend or whether to spend at all on a service or commodity should be the first question to be answered.
In case of large investment, the first step for a prospective buyer is to identify and correlate the valuable item or service with need or desire. It is better to test its utility first, for example, by borrowing it for a fixed time period. If he is satisfied of its necessity and really needs that, he has to buy it. But to save money, the consumer must find the best seller in terms of comparative pricing, quality & market reputation.
For lower priced items, one has to shop for the lowest prices, also keeping an eye on the quality aspect. For clothing, the best purchase is off-season discount sale, wherein you can get good clothes at cheap rates.
For financial investments, like in stock market, follow the golden rule of buying volatile stocks when the price of an item is down & sell it when it is at a high. The profit thus earned can be invested in the equity market for steady items.
Today’s internet has provided the best opportunities to shop vigorously for the best price before you actually drop the money. Especially for insurance, loan facilities and financial management, one is spoilt for choices. Proper analysis of rates and amortization goes a long way in saving even hundreds of dollars in a year.
Change of plan in case of services like telephone, insurance, etc. can save you costly dollars if one simply has the knowledge about the best existing plan.
Making a monthly budget for buying the essential items and regulating the number of luxury items can yield considerable savings.
Expensive weekends and extravagant outings should be replaced by reasonable excursion for wholesale entertainment.
Proper planning and food habits result in better living, both financially and mentally.
Paying the bills within due dates provides invaluable savings, because, in this case, as you have to pay, it is better to pay in time to avoid penalty.
If you are an employer, you should encourage flexible job responsibilities for your task force, making each one compatible with the work within a department. This will help in cutting down employees cost and help complete a task within time, even if someone is absent.
In a nutshell, remember, money saved is money earned.

Budget is the balance sheet in which you compute income and expenses before they actually occur. It gives a clear idea on where we have to restrict expenses, cut down on some items and restructure our habits for avoiding financial crisis. One can visualize the outflow of his resources and can thus mobilize further to meet the extra expenses.
Estimate of flow of money into various avenues of life gives him a chance to view his own position and current standing. It helps him to plan his future much better.
He thus can pay his bills in due time and ward off unnecessary penalty. In the same vein, he can apportion a certain sum from his income as savings, regarding it as a regular bill.
A proper budget helps the person to decide whether he can afford to buy any accessories or luxury item or to go for a desirable service. Thus it is a potential savior from unnecessary expenses.
Proper budgeting helps a person to explore investment opportunities. He can shore up his financial management by putting excess money in good stocks that gives good returns. Also, he can think up to go for various insurance facilities to save for the future.
A person can buy items in sale or off season to save money. He can also buy perishable items like food according to his budget, instead of indiscriminate hoarding.
Estimate of different categories of expenses will give him an idea of other avenues of savings or income. For example, to meet the bills of traveling for children to schools, he may go for car pool, thus saving on a car.
As money saved is money earned, proper analysis of spending the right amount on essential items will go a long way in better financial management. One may not be stingy while budgeting and allowances must be made for emergencies. Budgeting on the higher side will allow extra savings at the end of the month.
The golden rule of savings is taht a part of income must be apportioned to meet unforeseen circumstances. Thus the savings of an individual becomes regular and he can spend with confidence and satisfaction.
Meeting medical requirements is also a part of planning, because in the long run delaying a health check up or postponing a routine appointment with the doctor for lack of money will lead to greater crisis and unimaginable drainage of resources. Hence a prompt disbursement of fund can actually be a savings in disguise.
The habit of drawing up a budget gives the chance for other family members to act according to the need of the hour. They will even contribute to save better for the future. Children, if instructed, can help to abide by the budget. Thus they not only help save money, but by growing good habit, they in turn learn to respect the essence of time and money.
In short, proper budgeting really helps a person to save money and lead a better life.

Movies have become one of the fastest growing sources of entertainment. It can portray all sorts of emotions. It can depict circumstances real or hitherto unseen. Sometimes the reel & real life gets blurred and one wonders which follows the other.
For many people to watch movies is a time to unwind, to relax and to forget about other things of life. But going to a cinema hall each time to recreate is not possible. It is not only expensive, it may be inconvenient also in terms of time schedule and unavailability of booking. For those who have a PC and Internet, downloading movies online is the perfect solution to this problem. It is the perfect key to happiness who can surf the net.
Internet gives a candidate immense liberty to choose films from various categories, old or new. One can visit numerous sites for movies and pick and choose from them.
Usually there is a free trial period for a site for downloading movies online. After that most sites charge at less than a dollar per day for endless download of your choice.
A user can create movies with advanced interactive features such as menus, chapters, subtitles and much more. Unlike movies in a hall, he can always change it by simply flipping to another. Also, he can always pause or postpone the viewing according to his work schedule.
The system of electronic entertainment has thrown open the door for competition among various service providers and a consumer can avail the best services. In terms of pricing, quality of digital pictures, additional technologies, a consumer is truly the king here.
Downloading movies online gives the user freedom to know more about diverse culture and different trends which would have been unseen without the help of the internet.
But this access to various sites must be judicious. Especially in case of children, online movies can be more of a hazard than a convenience, as these may trespass on the morality and ethics of the user. Hence adults must monitor online movies for children and keep them away from indulging in adult sites.
Online movies also provide eco-friendly form of entertainment as there is no chance of pollution, packaging or disposal.
Most importantly, this system of entertainment is both cheap and durable. It helps in considerable savings of time and money and gives the user a perfect platform for performing multi dimensional tasks at home or even during office hours.
The access of movies online and their downloading has made it redundant for the user to spend upon and stack CDs or cassettes of movies.
Also, it is a perfect gift and absolute bliss for the connoisseurs of films who love to collect gleanings from the golden filmdom. It is truly a one stop shop for the enthusiastic movie lovers, spawning its charm on the young and old, excelling in utility and consumer satisfaction.
Hence the practice of downloading movies online can be looked upon as a cheap and effective way of recreation in today’s world.

Car audio system, in modern world, has become more of a symbol of status than of entertainment and utility. Selection of an audio system for your car can be as tough as buying clothes from a sale counter.
In this case, at least a working knowledge on basic components of car system shall stand in good stead for the customer.
Deck, amplifiers, speakers, subwoofers-these are the essential ingredients of a car stereo system.
A deck can range from simple cassette deck and CD player to hi-fi MP3 and mini disc gizmo. An amplifier, usually the symbol of power in the audio system, precisely, the power to blast, can have 1 to 7 channels. Fancy speakers will give the user enough mileage to hear and be heard. Subwoofers complement the low frequencies and bring forth the vibrations in a car that sets the rhythm in motion for the user.
Usually, most system comes with the facility of access to FM and AM radio.
Different models of stereo can have multi channel mobile sound processors, digital media, navigation, steering wheel audio control adapter, etc. Acoustics must be adopted in the vehicle for maximum output from minimum input of the system. Also, it must be installed in the best possible manner for maximum audibility of the passengers, yet must not impinge on the guidelines set by motor vehicles authority.
Before zeroing in on one option, a user can easily shop via Internet from various service providers and settle for the best price. Here, quality and pricing should be complementary as it is a luxury item.
Also, the music system must be easy to handle and operate. As the user will mostly concentrate on driving while operating the system, cumbersome operations can create confusion and even disaster. Features of the audio system must also be compatible with the vehicle itself. A sleek car can do without a very big gadget, while larger vehicles can have added features in the stereo system.
Fitting the audio system into the car is an important consideration before you buy. Some service providers offer free services. Also, a user has to learn whether his motor insurance covers the audio system as well.
If you are a new user, it is best to go for simple audio system, instead of the advanced and highly customized ones. Also, it is better to use cheaper audio systems in the car used especially for children as they are prone to damage it by their persistent experimentation.
Most importantly, it is always advisable for the user to stick to his budget while choosing an audio system. One must remember that with the frenetic pace of technology and digitalization even the most advanced system can fall by the wayside within a span of as little as six months.
Hence a user must look for a quality, cheap and effective audio system for his recreation while he takes a ride out in this fast changing world.
Summary- This article tells us about the way one can choose an audio car system.

Brand, in the view point of manufacturer or service provider, is a feature that distinguishes the product or service in a market. A user may define brand as the one which he can recognize and identify as an integral part of his life. In this age of modernization and industrialization, consumer has emerged as the uncrowned king. He is the monarch of all he surveys. And to attract his attention, organizations are ready to innovate and upgrade. The 4P basic idea of Product, Pricing, Promotion and Place has come to evolve mostly around Promotion, as market survey indicates consumer likes to buy a brand, not a product or service.
And to showcase promotion, companies are making a beeline for the most saleable of products, that is, the Hollywood stars. Some say you can even sell dreams in Hollywood. So it is but natural that when the celebrities, who are the stuff of our dreams, wave to us from the silver screen or stare at us from flashy bill boards endorsing a product, we simply can not ignore the plea. After all, even for a flitting second, the user will feel that he is sharing something with his favorite idol.
Brand promotion by a Hollywood star enhances the longevity of the product, adding to its quality and mass appeal. The conveyed image of a successful individual using the product creates a sense of demand and urgency to get hold of it by the consumer. Better still, he begins to identify the product with the star, thus adding immensely to its recall value.
A user only sees a product when it is seen and this observation is triggered by various external factors and internal conditions. Perception of familiarity, trust and contentment are foremost conditions that influence the choice of a particular brand over another. Since the flashy world of entertainment and razzmatazz have easy recall value, the faces we adore and the style we follow compel a consumer to select that particular brand from the bouquet of choicest of products existing in the market. Market analysts have even noticed the trend of shift of consumers from one product to another once their favorite star leaves one company and starts to endorse another.
As Hollywood spawns the magic over almost the entire world, enticing the young and old, the poor and rich by its continued tales of fantasies and glory, emotions and intricacies, fervent admirers of the stars follow the fashion and style with bated breath. To some of them, turning down the plea of a star to use his product is akin to sacrilege. It gives a sense of vicarious pleasure to the consumer and awards him a sense of supremacy over his idol, as he feels that he is doing a favor by adopting the product promoted by the star. As the company and the star laugh together all the way to the bank, the consumer is left clutching with his straw of imagination that has been so well played upon by the promotional blitz of a brand by a Hollywood star.

Life, they say, takes a new turn at sixty. It is the pleasant plateau from where one can look at the accomplishments down the years, all the endeavours and unfinished attempts in perspective, mellowed by wisdom of age. And as one gradually sets onwards to bask in the afternoon sun of an unfinished life, new vistas are opened in front of the myopic eyes.
At 61, Dame Dolly Parton, would have just been any other woman but for her being Dolly Parton. The Queen Of Country, on a recent celebrity visit at the rugged old steel town of Rotherham, shocked all and sundry by hinting that she had led a blissful open marriage with her husband Carl Dean. That their marriage had stood the test of time for 41 years is another matter, declared the Queen Bee, as she unabashedly opened up before the audience of the sleepy South Yorkshire steel town, already overwhelmed by her physical presence.
The penchant of the old war-horse for the battle-cry of media attention was not lost upon the people. If anyone had question on her size of heart, almost everyone was left speechless about the volume and marvel of what covers her feelings inside- the ‘twin wonders’ - which she carried on so well amidst her dainty figure.
Whether she had deliberately spoken to train media spotlight on herself or it was a confession long overdue, no one can really be sure. But her legion of fans world over was left in the haze of vision of a prancing Dolly Parton cavorting to male fancy outside her regular partner.
How they wished they had heard it before!
Come on, Dolly!
Open up one more time.
Here we come!

Mr. President, we have all heard that armed robots are coming up very fast to replace our mundane soldiers in and out of the battle-fields in near future. It is really a heartening fact that at last you are thinking of preserving the nation by recalling the poor soldiers from their battle-front or interior vigilance. When Artificial Intelligence and Mechanized Decimation can be unleashed by our Robo-mates, it is indeed a waste of precious manpower and human faculty to be deployed in such trivial thing as martial artillery and strategies.
Mr. President, Sir, as you may know it has been months since a mother has embraced her dear child or a brother has held her little sister’s hand on a sun-bathed morning, not to speak of the innumerable heartburn caused to grieving lovers separated due to the duty of the keepers of a nation’s fortune. The patriotism and kindred spirit of a proud warrior, ready to give his all and even die for his Fatherland, does not really weigh up to the better option of Robotics which will terminate opposing forces with unerring accuracy and unflinching emotions. We are on the verge of realising our dream of a World free of the fear of war and liberated from the stress of terrorism because of your foresight in creating this set of super-predators who are programmed to execute orders and annihilate.
But , Sir, with due respect to you and your Technical Support team, we do hope that that these Terminators would not turn Frankenstein and train the guns at the very source which have armed them in the first place. Worse still, have you told these gun-toting trigger-happy Mean Machines that a young boy with a baseball bat may be just going to the playground before being shot down, (a case of mistaken encounter, we are sure if it at all happens), or a crowd of chanting football-frenzy supporters were just that and not rioters who deserved to stay alive rather than being wiped out altogether.
And, Mr. President, Sir, as we form a core section of your vote bank and we pride ourselves as devoted and duty bound citizens of our Fatherland, we recognize that the steps undertaken by you are in the best of interests of the nation and its nationals. So, dear Sir, we entreat you to expedite the process of modernization of our armed forces and enable us to move forward in our quest for the Holy Grail of Sovereignty over the other denizens of Planet Earth. The day of Armageddon is not far way.
So, Mr. President, Sir, give us this day our Robo-cops who can kill and be killed without ever thinking or questioning your actions and motives.

All things have to come to an end, and if success becomes a habit, good things seem to last that much longer. Arsenal, the run-away leaders in English Premier League this season, had embarked on a 28-game unbeaten streak till they met their nemesis in FC Sevilla, the Spanish upstart. And like in case of many losers, the ugly monster of failure and frustration loomed larger than the defeat itself.
On Tuesday, in the battle of leadership of Group H in UEFA Champions League at Madrid, Sevilla outclassed Arsenal 3-1, the result a clear indication of their supremacy during the game.
But there was a French connection in the English defeat. Arsene Wenger, the volatile and talismanic manager of Arsenal, first fielded an experimental team that could not defend the Sevilla knockout punch. During the game, Arsene Wenger had repeated run-ins with the Fourth Official, who persistently tried to restrict his movement within his technical area. Then, 10 minutes from end of play, Wenger was involved in a heated war of words with Dutch Referee Eric Braamhaar over alleged time-wasting tactics by Sevilla Captain Daniel Alves. After being expelled, the recalcitrant Arsenal manager did not leave the field and peeped from his dugout, only to witness the last rites of capitulation of his side.
Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez , delighted after this famous victory, said his team really deserved it as they moved into the top spot of Group H.
Although Arsenal took the lead through a clever Eduardo, a Philippe Senderos howler handed back Sevilla the advantage as Seydou Keita scored for 1-1. The frenetic pace of the game was set 10 minutes later when ‘Man of the Match’ Luis Fabiano headed home for Sevilla. (2-1).
Arsenal tried with their limited resources but Sevilla held on gamely and even scored 5 minutes from the end via a deserved penalty by Kanoute.
After the match Arsene Wenger continued his tirade against the Match Officials but was marvelously restrained when asked about his decision to field an under-strength Arsenal in a significant Champions league Match. It only goes to prove that all French men are not the most impeccable gentlemen.

- ASISH BASAK

The single most important factor that plagues a society is not any disease, natural calamity, nor even terrorism. It is the worry, the reason behind more premature ailments and death than all other terrors can unleash. Each year innumerable people die from broken spirit and numerous additional maladies that spring from tension due to stress.
The human nature has four basic components - the Body, the Mind, the Heart and the Spirit. Worry enters unobtrusively in our system in response to a vague threat or stress. Slowly it rears its ugly head in the body, spreading such virulent poison as anxiety, insecurity, doubt, nervousness, frustration, sadness, foreboding and lethargy. All these negative aspects trigger more negative emotions and slowly worry begins to spread its evil tentacles over the free mental space. After enduring the formative stages, it then whimsically flirts in the alleys of the individual’s mind. The ever-expanding dark cloud of fear slowly eats into the human nervous system (like a deadly virus; each day building up more bad sector in the mind disk). This in turn destabilizes the mental equilibrium to cause an all consuming anger and resentment, ultimately leading the victim to complete disintegration. The control centre (brain), the engine (heart) and the fuel (spirit) are irreparably damaged under sporadic or perpetual stress and ultimately the machine (body) gives way.
Can anyone say why and when do we worry? Actually, there is no fixed time or exact reason, for if there was so, no body would have worried or felt drained out of stress.
But what is stress? According to its physical definition, stress is force applied per unit area. Our brain cells are capable of taking load (in form of ideas) till a certain limit (variable for different individuals due to various factors like environment, perception, upbringing, adaptability, etc.). Beyond this breaking point, an average individual begins to feel a sensation of uneasiness, undue solicitude; negligence, anger and general resentment towards life and society.
This scenario is explicitly seen in the case of our children. Bearing impressionable and tender minds, having learnt little from life during their nascent interaction with their environment, most school-going children are falling prey to the menace of stress.
Today’s world has set a tough guideline for students. Although some veterans may argue that there are more opportunities and prospects than earlier days, yet the demon of Peer Pressure and Parental Pressure leaves a telling impression on tender minds. Not just only in studies, a student has to excel in extra curriculum as well. 24 hours a day is split around his tuition time at various places. There is off course the attraction of a quick burger or a new film in the multiplex to add spice to their dreary lives. Bonding with the opposite gender (inspired by the tinsel world) is now seen from even primary stage at schools. Such dalliance of immature minds often leads to traumatic situations, as evident from almost regular reports in the media. Sensitivity and juvenile euphoria, tempered by abysmal stress, has even directed a few students to commit acts of folly and turpitude like molestation, eve teasing, drug addiction, suicide or even homicide. Indecision about the choice of courses to build a career, too much options in case of private institutions (all competing with each other to establish their brand value), parental shepherding towards the line of distraction, inability to cultivate one’s own intellect - all this make the stress on students a bit too much to handle sometimes.
The case of stress on senior students is more acute and abject. Many an ambition is nipped in the bud as they have to toil for regular jobs after completion of studies to meet their ends. Even students from wealthy background have to settle for a vocation of entirely different perspective than what he has viewed for himself. Naturally, after a few months, they get de-motivated and grow restless. The stress of not standing up to his own vision drives him to an inert, mundane and barren life, shorn of thrills and frills which he has so painfully planned for himself for so many years.
If such is the case of the students, then let us extrapolate the situation on the society as a whole. The internal state of animosity, felt due to duress, is neither a prerogative of the riches, nor the badge of the downtrodden. It pervades across all masses, irrespective of class, creed and social status, hanging like an albatross on almost every member of the society, dogging every step and stage of human life. Today’s cosmopolitan world has redefined and restructured the way we live and like all other laws of the universe, it has elicited equal and opposite reactions to the force of advancement. Life has become more complex, more problematic and more chaotic. And with them all, inevitably, we are given more gist for worrying as we are faced with increased stress and more crises.
Most of the things we worry about hardly ever happen by the law of averages; but we still torment ourselves with disturbing thoughts and fret and fume about them. Thus, worry is an unproductive and wastefully extravagant negative spiral which feeds on itself. The more time and energy is spent on it, the more it sucks into itself. Considerate and constant stress constricts the smooth flow of confidence, the X factor which determines the rate of success in our life. As the lack of confidence seeps into our conscience, we tend to be more aware, more conscious about it. As we become more conscious, slowly our whole system undergoes changes. Because our emotions and attitude are very delicately inter-balanced, we gradually get conditioned to think and accept more such problems. In other words, we become receptive to this malady and sooner, rather than later, we become the slave of the all-conquering force of worry.
Worry becomes a habit that is associated not only with the well-being of oneself, of near and dear ones, but also encompasses the distant notions like welfare of one’s favourite team, society, country, world or even the universe. Worrying about tomorrow and repenting about the lost time (that is, the yesterday) will surely make us worry about our future later on. Because we all know but tend to forget the simple truth that today was the tomorrow we had worried about yesterday. Thus worrying creates a vicious circle from which we can never hope to come out unless we try it from today, nay, this moment only.
Six basic emotions - surprise, happiness, fear, anger, disgust and sadness - have been associated with human nervous system under stress. Since man is a gregarious animal, he is being judged every waking moment. Each individual, by dint of his body language, constantly gives out non-verbal signals to the people surrounding him. All the above emotions, however may one try to conceal, are revealed by the various positioning and movement of head, eyes, lips, shoulders, hands, fingers and legs that speak a language understood across borders and party lines.
Worry is a classic case of ‘fight and flight’ stimuli with the notable absence of actual activity. One can neither dispel worry by fighting it nor can escape from it by running away. Absolute stress impedes our ability to lead a healthy life and compress ourselves physically, mentally and spiritually. The rationale and creative sight is mostly blocked or shriveled to a miniscule, through which only depression and hypertension adsorbs inside the human system. Worry produces stress in body, increases our blood pressure and produces several physical and chemical changes in our exterior and interior body system. Itching of skin, hair loss, acnes and pimples, etc. are visible impacts of excessive worry and tension. Internally, it can damage our immune system causing stomach aches, constipation, acid, gas, hysteria, insomnia, headache, heart attack, stroke, etc. We have to consciously break the worry habit, before it breaks us completely.
Some people worry so much that sometimes they worry that they are not worrying enough to keep them well. Thus everything originates and also culminates in the mind.
Insanity, according to some prominent psychologists, is a shelter of harassed individuals who have retreated into this surreal stress-free world, unable to cope with the hazards of the harsh reality.
Although worry is universally recognised as a damaging exercise, sometimes it can positively affect our imagination and action. As worry begets fear, we may start to imagine different things and plan and act accordingly. Thus it sparks our imagination and initiates action which under ordinary circumstances would not have happened. Thus worry acts as a trigger factor of the nervous system.
Most people seek negative aspects and discontentment in whatever situation they find themselves in. A vast majority of us tend to live in problem-centric castles of thin air where the pasture yonder always looks greener. It is imperative that we stop whining and start finding whatever is good under the existing scenario. Happiness and contentment will fill our lives with abundance instead of the insecurity and inconvenience we feel ourselves in. This enlightened state of the quasi-forgotten soul can be equated with that of the elation of victory which infuses a wonderful feeling of both ecstasy and gratification. We must abstain from being continuously stressed and fill our life with troubles most of which have never and will never happen. Worrying minutes do not affect the clock in any way except that it only decreases our span of life in the earth.
Our mental attitude is the deciding factor that determines our fate. Neuroscience research has found many patients spending sleepless nights mourning over gross misfortunes most of which never happen in real life. Every day the husband goes to the office, the child goes to the school, the mother cooks on the gas oven, hundreds of people cross the bridge, thousands ride a railway carriage - these are all day-to-day occurrences where each one safely returns to the warmth and shelter of home. How many of these suffer mishaps according to the law of averages? It is about 1%, a really microscopic part of the gigantic proportion of what we worry about.
Most of us cannot accept the truth that some events which are beyond our control cannot be controlled. It is equally true that each of us is enamoured with our own well-being and self-good. But if you consider your chief worries against the backdrop of the innumerable and untold sufferings of the masses across the world, over the years, then you will be really ashamed that you have even bothered to think that you are in trouble. All your worries will seem so trivial in terms of eternity. And then you realise how fortunate you have been, and you start to enjoy the blessings of life instead of languishing for the misses that had occurred.

                                                                                      - ASISH BASAK

Communication encompasses the concept of transference and understanding of an idea sent by the sender and absorbed by the receiver through a proper medium. If the encoded message deviates greatly from the intended one, some experts aver that communication had not actually taken place. When a message has been exchanged but the vital content is missing, then it is equivalent to a fruitless communication. Thus it can be inferred that communication is a process or flow which may be hindered by blockage or obstacles in the medium. The total flow may be thought to originate from the sender (source), then pass intermediate channels and then reach the receiver, from whom a feed back to the original source completes the entire loop.
During its meandering journey from the sender till the receiver, the original message has to be encoded and decoded several times if there are several intervening bodies. This operation depends on the skill set of the entities (like his reading, writing, listening and reasoning ability), socio-cultural conditions, timing and the complexity of the message itself, etc. The mode or channel of communication, be it formal (authority in an organisation, media, etc.) or informal (friends, family members, grapevine in the office, etc.) also significantly affect communication. The vocalised message invariably takes different shapes when accompanied by various bodily gestures, facial expressions and other non-verbal messages. All these factors may combine to distort the veracity of the actual or intended fact when the receiver gives the feedback as a check against misunderstandings.
Communication has great scope all over the world in almost every aspect of life, be it family, friendship, offices, public places, etc. It is the basic cornerstone of the career decision of a job aspirant. The critical skill of being clear and coherent in both organisational and personal life is the key to communication effectiveness. In these changing times of instant access and limitless information, we must be constantly alert that we are understood properly and equally make sure we understand others as well.
The word ‘communication’ comes from adjoining two Latin root words-’cum’ (meaning ‘with’) and ‘unio’ (union). Thus, in etymology and spirit, communication has the onerous responsibility to impart commonality and harmony. Over the years, as the horizon of communication has broadened, it has brought into its fold diverse range of people, demographics, habits, tolerance level, activities, etc.
Successful communication inherently depends on the credibility and sincerity of the communicator, coupled with the perceptibility and attitude of the receiver. As communication is basically an interaction process, variety of perceptions and difference in judgment usually creates a lot of problem in transmission of ideas and information. The dialogue which we have visualized, written and rehearsed many times must sound as good as they were intended to be when they are actually delivered.
Like the sender, a receiver also affects communication in varying degree by their poor retention capacity, lack of interest and attention, disagreement with the message, unacceptability of new ideas and changes, insincerity and a host of other factors, all of which may not be mental. Difference in age, cultural standing, technical know-how, managerial hierarchy, timing and type of the message, semantic problem, filtering of the original message (unnecessary additions and alterations, chopping and changing of words to suit one’s purpose, putting unintended emphasis on certain words for vested interests) are a few of the well-known hurdles of communication we face everyday in different spheres of life.
Although communication is an extrinsic process, its success apparently depends a great deal on the inherent ability of the perceiver. It takes various forms and draws different shades from his attitude, interests, needs, emotions, knowledge, adaptability, motivation, religious beliefs, economic status, past experiences, etc.
Major drawback in a communication mostly occurs from ill-constructed messages, with either too scanty or excess information packed in it. Usage of high sounding words, highlighting the ‘I’ or ‘My’ word in each sentence and giving scant respect for the position of the receiver and surroundings are recipes for a disastrous communication. Unwanted noise, passing of too many hands before the actual delivery as a result of distance between the sender and the receiver (or due to intervening channel partners), formalities and social clauses, etc. provide unwanted interruptions to swift and successful communication. Bias in perception may be caused due to stereotyping (attributing general characteristics to all members of a class or group), halo effect (single trait overshadowing other features), mirror image (wishing that others follow you) and comparison (contrasting features of different individuals).
Thus we see that communication is dependent on a combination of several factors for it to be an ultimate success. We must be very careful in not confusing communication as only information. Communication is actually a medium; it is an act, while information is the message or the extractable content of the communication. Thus the medium must not be confused with the message itself.
We also have to remember that we communicate With someone and Not To someone. It must always be a team effort between the speaker and the listener for a successful communication to take place. And both the parties have to co-operate with each other. Especially when the communication is object-oriented, that is, when you want something from somebody, there must not be any ambiguity.
Hence we should always give due respect and value to each word for ‘words are the ambassadors of our souls’. Then only we can comprehend the true value of successful communication.
